Start-Up Aspires to Make the World 'One Big Study Group'

Chronicle Article

Thousands of students are enrolling in gigantic open online courses.

Would students go for vast open online study groups, too?

OpenStudy, a start-up company spun off by Georgia Tech and Emory University, is betting the answer to that question is yes. Its Web site is the latest effort to create a social platform for independent learners who want to help each other study the huge trove of educational materials published free online by universities like MIT.

I'm enrolled in a different MOOC and there are some sharply defined pros and cons to being there. Sure, some day higher ed may be able to somehow accommodate the results of massive open online courses but I'm doubtful that it will be any time soon.

In a sense, we could argue that the world was already "one big study group" and this is just the newest attempt to facilitate it.

Learning occurs between the ears and takes time and effort. The world is filled with things to learn. Sometimes we need certificates, diplomas, or other kinds of proof that achievements have been made. Institutions in the business of providing that proof have workflows to follow and criteria to meet before someone signs off.
